Mission Conference in Rome

Hey Fam,

So despite my best efforts to avoid going to the hospital during my
Mission, I've gone 5 times in the past 8 days.... swag. So last week
like y'all know I slid and fell going down a hill and cut my finger in
a piece of what I think was glass but I honestly don't know. I got 5
stitches. Then it got infected. So I had to go back to the hospital
often so they could check up on it and continue to disinfect it and
change my bandages. It was a good time. But today I got my stitches
out and everything seems to be okay. So that's cool.

This week we also had the special opportunity to go to Rome! We had
all the missionaries come up for a big conference with guest
appearances from Elders Nelson, Hallstrom, and Kearon. (For those who
don't know those are various leaders in our church) So there were some
big guns there. One of the cool things about the conference was
that I was able to see all of my good friends from the mission.
Reuniting with old comps, friends, and diverse legends of the
mission. Seeing as I'm near the end of my days in Italy I know a lot
of people and apparently a lot of people "know" me. It was a good
time. Besides that though the speakers were amazing. Elder Nelson at
the young age of 92 got up and preached to us for a straight hour
about the gathering of Israel starting with Abraham. That man made me
feel like an intellectual ant compared to his vast biblical knowledge.
The man knows his stuff. He told us he got a new set of scriptures and
read all of the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine
and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price in two weeks..... my jaw
dropped when he said that. Like I said, intellectual ant. Anyways, the
conference was awesome. I left feeling spiritually uplifted while at
the same time feeling as though my metaphorical boxes had been broken
and burnt to ashes. (If that doesn't make sense, don't worry, I'll
explain at a later date.)

Also, this week we had a cool experience with one of our friends Paul.
Short backstory. Paul is from Nigeria but fled many years ago. Spent 8
years in Libya till everything he had was destroyed and with a broken
leg was forced to come to Italy. Two years later, because of poor care
before arriving to Italy, Paul is missing a piece of bone in his left
leg. So obviously he can't walk. He's been confined to a wheelchair
for the past two years. Basically he's had his fair share of trials
and they don't seem to be ending soon. I have much respect for this
man though, even after everything he has gone through he doesn't
mummers against God. Instead he praises him. We had a great teaching
moment with him while visiting him and another member of our church in
the hospital. The Lord blessed all those present and we've all begun
to see miracles happening in Paul's life. I'm sorry for not going into
much detail but I don't think it would be appropriate. It suffices me
to say that it was a very spiritual and uplifting experience.

Personally I'm doing very well. I've been trying hard not think about
how little time I have left here in Italy hahah Hopefully it doesn't
go by too fast. Love you all, have a good week

An Unexpected Visit to the Hospital

Hey Fam,

All right so it was a good week this week. I guess the only problem is, is that this morning we went to the beach to go fishing and then I slipped and fell when I was going down this hill and when I fell I cut my finger on a piece of glass. It was a pretty deep cut so it started bleeding a lot and then we had to go to the hospital. When we got to the hospital they brought me into the emergency room and then I got four stitches. I have four stitches in my hand and so that's good. It might be an accurate representation of this week but I'm not exactly sure. I think that the week probably went better than cutting my hand.

This week we also made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Well I made them, and they were really really good.

If my English sounds bad in this email I'm sorry. It's because I'm just speaking into the iPad and the iPad is typing the email because I can't really type because my finger is out of service I guess you could say. So I guess my email might just be one continuous sentence.

Things are going good here in Taranto. My companion is good and we have a lot of fun. Everyone is listening to me while I "type" this email so I can't say anything bad about anyone so I guess I will just say that everything is going good.

This upcoming week on Wednesday we get to go to Rome because there's going to be a big mission conference again. So, we're gonna take a sick seven hour train ride there so that should be fun. I guess that I really don't have anything to say. I love you guys and I hope you have a great week.

Transferred to Taranto

Dear Fam,

Well I got transferred. Monday night the call came in and I left Foggia. I got transferred to a city about 3 hours south called Taranto. We were "blown-in" and "opened up" a companionship meaning me and my comp are both new to the city and there weren't missionaries here previous to us. Currently, there are already a pair of Elders there but they decided to add another one so we came in. So that's exciting.... kinda. Haha

It was sad to leave Foggia though. I was honestly really bummed. Tuesday and Wednesday were spent saying a lot of goodbyes to people, doing a lot of laundry, and resentfully packing my things. To be honest I didn't want to leave Foggia at all so saying goodbyes was hard. It was hard to leave a city after having accomplished so much. Our friends were sad to see me go and I was equally as sad to leave them. Tears were shed, but not my own. (Insert picture of a Bull) I guess God has a plan for all of us and this is a part of mine. I will hope that this is the case. But looking back before I got to Foggia I had heard of other missionaries talking down on it. Now having served in and left the city, I can honestly say Foggia was one of my favorite times in my mission. I learned a lot and loved a lot. Had a lot of fun. Met a lot of great people and was surrounded by the best. Like Dr. Seuss once said "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened". Well at least I think that's who said that and I think that's how the quote goes but I'm not really sure haha.

Well, now I'm in Taranto. It's a pretty big city in southern Puglia. It's on the ocean and has a real big port so big ships are coming in and out all the time. The missionaries just recently got a new house (the other one was horrible and disgusting). The new house is awesome. It's new and it's on the 16th floor. So we have a cool view. Since we just arrived though and the house wasn't equipped for 4 missionaries, me and my comp don't have study desks or closets or like anything except beds hahaha. All my stuff is still in my suitcases. I might live out of it for the next 5 weeks. My companions name is Anziano Talon Bates. He is from Gilbert, Arizona. We were actually in the MTC together so we started our mission together and in 5 weeks we will finish together. So that's neat. The church here in Taranto is pretty big. We have a nice church building and lots of members coming each week. So that's cool.

So the next 5 weeks will be interesting. Since we are opening up this companionship here we don't have the work of previous missionaries to really work off of. We are basically starting from scratch. Which kinda sucks. But I guess God wants to see if we're gunna work hard or roll over and die before we finish our missions. I don't plan on rolling over and dying though so it's going to be an uphill battle for the next little while. I'm okay with it though. We have a lot of people here willing to help us. My companion and I are both very experienced. We got a lot going for us so we will hope for the best.

Well that's about it for this week. I love you all and hope you have a good week.
